“You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”

Finally free from the franchise machine, Ryan Coogler returns with Sinners—a fierce, genre-splicing vision of music, myth, and memory. Set in 1930s Mississippi, under the shadow of Jim Crow and Prohibition, it follows the Smokestack Twins (both played by Michael B. Jordan), gangsters-turned-impresarios, as they build a juke joint on the bones of an old sawmill. But when the music starts, something older and hungrier than the night is stirred awake.

A film alive with the sweat, danger, and magic of the blues, Sinners unfolds like a haunted folk tale, weaving together histories of Black artistry, resistance, and exploitation. Coogler’s camera, guided by cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, moves between intimacy and spectacle, shifting formats and frames as the juke joint fills with liquor, desire, and spirits both earthly and unearthly.

Sliding in as a late entry to our “Vampiros Cubos” season, Sinners is a fitting epilogue—a vampire story where the ghosts are in the music, the land, and the blood.
