Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav (Stellan Skarsgard), a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. The two sisters must navigate their relationship with their father and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.
Joachim Trier returns to his beloved Oslo, reuniting with frequent co-writer Eskil Vogt for their richest, most complex story to date, with much of the action playing out inside the family home — a house built of memory and that’s as much a living, breathing character as the family residing in it. Anchored by astonishing performances across the board, Sentimental Value is a rewarding and profoundly moving experience that intimately explores sisterhood, father-daughter relationships and the evocative power of childhood memories.
