Derek Jarman made his feature debut with this sex 'n' sandals classic, an insanely arousing take on the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.

Apart from being the first film by one of the great artists of the 20th century, Sebastiane is a landmark for two reasons. For one, it was the first feature film to be made in Latin, taking place as it does in the Roman empire in the 3rd century AD. But more importantly for our purposes, Sebastiane was the first film to be passed by the British Board of Film Censors that featured an erect penis. Veni vidi vici!

The desert garrison setting provides Jarman with ample homo-erotic opportunities. The loincloths leave gratifyingly little to the imagination, and you get the sense that boredom and heat are driving the men slowly mad, sending them towards explosive acts of sex and violence. This is a coarse, brutish world where the sensitive (and of course gorgeous) Sebastian is on an inexorable path towards penetration of one kind or another.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Sebastiane is an unmissable classic of queer cinema.
