Fans of genre cinema rejoice! A high point from the greatest period of Hong Kong's popular cinema, Peking Opera Blues is a joyous spectacle of colour and movement with a political edge.

The destinies of 3 women (and some men but they aren't as important) collide in a Peking Opera theatre, political intrigue mixing with the personal in Tsui Hark's rambunctious melting pot of a movie. Tsao Wan is torn between her love for her country and her love for her general of a father as she works as a revolutionary while disguised as a man, Bai Niu wants to act in her father's theatre but the theatrical tradition demands that only men act and Sheung Hung the courtesan is just after some money. When these conflicting schemes and goals begin to overlap in the charged atmosphere of the opera house, things quickly get farcical as backstage intrigue opens up onto History.

Our heroines are played by three goddesses of the Chinese cinema: Brigitte Lin, Cherie Chung and Sally Yeh. With beautifully orchestrated action, comedy, dance and more, Tsui Hark's masterful hand lights up the screen and our hearts with this kinetically feminist fable about life's unexpected paths and friendships.

Doors open 30 minutes before advertised start time. All film screenings are ad-free and 18+ unless otherwise stated, and start with no more than a 10 min selection of trailers.
