KRAUT STUDIES – Film and Images in Science and Education

Silent Films with a Live Score from Charlie Miles & Oliver Brouwer

Gratis vegan meal from 6pm / Screening at 7:30pm

A blend of archive film and live music at KRAUT STUDIES. This special evening features rarely seen silent educational films from 1930s–50s Germany, brought to life with a live, improvised score by Charlie Miles & Oliver Brouwer. Originally created for classroom use, these visually striking films are recontextualised through sound, offering a fresh and thought-provoking experience. The event is part of a cultural exchange between Bristol and its twin city Hannover, celebrating international collaboration through the arts. Enjoy a free vegan meal from 6pm before the screening begins at 7:30pm. Doors open at 18:00 – join us for an evening of film, music, and connection.

As part of the Hanover to Bristol 'Multiplier' trip, Kino im Sprengel – an independent cinema in Bristol's twin city of Hanover – is bringing a small selection of early examples from its extensive educational film collection to Bristol: silent films from the 1930s to the 1950s, many of which were produced during the Nazi era for the then ‘Reichsstelle für den Unterrichtsfilm’ (Reich Office for Educational Films), declared harmless after review by the British and American military governments, and continued to be used in the Federal Republic of Germany through the state media institute FWU.

The films show technical and biological processes, the struggle of lifeguards and underwater worlds, some of them using the new methods of cinematic representation developed at the time for scientific films, such as microscopy, telescopy and slow motion.

After lying unseen and unshown on shelves for decades as outdated, the films were saved from imminent destruction by cinema enthusiasts at the beginning of the new century...

At the Cube, the films are scored with live improvisation from Charlie Miles & Oliver Brouwer, distancing them from their original educational and ideological purpose. The emphasis shifts to their undeniable aesthetic impact.

The Kino im Sprengel thanks the Cube for this exciting collaboration.

Event organised in partnership between Cube Cinema, Bristol; Kino im Sprengel, Hannover; Hannover international culture team and Bristol International Twinning Officer.

Thank you to the Bristol Guild of Guardians for their support for this event.

Part of the Hannover 'Multiplier' Visit

Bristol and Hannover are twin cities. The link has existed since 1947, making it one of the oldest existing German-British city partnerships since the Second World War.

This city partnership stands for democracy, intercultural exchange and international cohesion. It consists of a lively network of friendly connections between different people within civil society and municipal institutions, e.g. from the fields of culture, youth, sport and education. Each city has an International Twinning Officer working within the Municipal City Council, whose role is to connect, faciliate and promote links between the cities. There are also volunteer led Twinning Associations in both cities: The Bristol Hannover Council and Hannover Bristol Gesellschaft

Bristol’s International Twinning Officer travelled to Hannover in Sept 2024, where she visited the groups and organisations who will be taking part in the Sept 2025 ‘Multiplier visit’. Following her visit, Zoe Gibbons has contacted Bristol groups and organisations who she believes have a similar ethos or aim to a visiting counterpart from Hannover. The aim is that the Hannover delegation visits their Bristol equivalent to create new links, facilitate shared learning, new projects and exchange.

Hannover Culture team have initiated and funded this project. They state that “in the face of multiple crises and an increasing polarization and renationalization of society, the multiplier trips are intended to contribute to link local cultural workers, educational initiatives and civil society groups with each other, strengthened by the city partnership network and jointly develop projects and democracy-promoting projects and partnerships.”

The date of the visit is Sat 27 Sept to Fri 3 Oct 2025. The group will have 6 full days in Bristol, and there will be a number of social occasions that Bristol partners are very welcome to attend.

Nb – Bristol is twinned with 7 cities around the world. As well as Hannover (Germany), we are twinned with Bordeaux (France), Porto (Portugal), Tbilisi (Georgia), Beira (Mozambique), Puerto Morazan (Nicaragua) and Guangzhou (China). Cities are listed in the order that Bristol twinned with them.
