Fifteen years and around 150 films in, Hellfire Video Club are finally due to pop their clogs. Wave goodbye to us, and your senses, as we transcend into the stars tonight. HFVC RIP! It’s been a blast.
Well we’ve never been averse to skipping around various genres, so sooner or later we were bound to land upon a Psychedelic-Blaxploitation -philosophical-space-Jazz movie, complemented by a synapse zapping recruitment film made by a Californian UFO cult. Burn your newspapers, throw your phone in a ditch, and blast off into the cosmos with Sun Ra, and the Unarius Academy of Science.
8.15 PM: SPACE IS THE PLACE (John Coney, 1974, USA, 85 mins, Cert 18 (CTBA)
A unique film: Part time-travelling street-level morality play, part occulted philosophy lecture, part gloriously technicolour low-budget sci-fi. Chuck into this stew a gang of fantastic jazz performances from a commune-groop at the height of their powers, and you have an eldritch artefact guaranteed to mesmerise.
The film is apparently based on a series of lectures Sun Ra gave at Berkeley university - it follows Ra as he skips through time and space trying to encourage African Americans to resettle on another planet through his "outer space employment agency", meanwhile engaging in a card game with "the overseer" for the fate of humanity.
Beautifully filmed, costumed, and set-dressed - this will be a delight on the big screen. So whether you are an angel, demon, jazzhead or Saturnite - make sure you don't miss this rare screening!
10.15pm: THE ARRIVAL (Ruth Norman, 1980, USA, 57 mins, Cert 18 (CTBA)
Seeing us off into the good night, we present a truly one-of-a-kind DIY marvel made by members of Unarius (UNniversal Articulate Interdimensional Understanding of Science) - a real-life, still in-existence Californian cosmic visionary UFO religion.follows the adventures of primitive prehistoric human Zan, as he discovers a spaceship and learns of his past lives on the continent of Lemuria, 162,000 years ago. A jaw dropping display of home-made optical and visual FX provide the icing on the cake to this massively eccentric but genuinely heartfelt vision. You're unlikely to have seen anything like this before, and you doubtless won’t again. Go forth Star People!
Hellfire DJs will be in the bar with a bag full of outré/cosmic/deep/spiritual jazz records to complement the vibe. Setting skronk to max...
