RYAN FRANCESCONI is to date best known to date as Joanna Newsom’s musical director, however in stunning solo mode Francesconi's acoustic guitar creates a surprisingly rich sound that hints at his extensive musical interests - American bluegrass, Baroque lute music, traditional Bulgarian folk among others. He does it all live, in compelling virtuoso fashion. Spellbinding compositions with a unique beauty performed by a guitar master.
NANCY ELIZABETH lets breathe songs from two albums on the Leaf Label plus some new unreleased tracks... come hear her sing. She has that sense of mystery combined with an undisguised love of melody, mood and emotion that makes her a real treasure. Like John Martyn she draws on folk song but effortlessly moves to other plateaux. Her “Kept Impulses” tour in May 2010 with Hauschka and James Blackshaw found her moving from piano to harp to guitar and exploring a deep well of emotions.
An under-cherished diamond in Bristol’s subterranean treasure vault, Sam Jones aka THE BALKY MULE glints, unkempt. With previous history in some of the city’s very finest and fuzziest bands (Movietone, Crescent, Flying Saucer Attack), few round here can lay claim to greater musical pedigree, yet last album “The Length Of The Rail” (released on FatCat) is the most quietly heartfelt of works, a set of scuffed pop songs that hum with Bristolian soul. Rare live kicks.
