An evening in the Republica de Santa Banana - a multi-media tropical extravaganza
Popacatepetl are here to blow your expectations away with a curious
hybrid of Brazilian samba and Trinidadian calypso, mixed in with influences as diverse as medieval pop, 1930s dance band music and Turkish kasbah rock.
'Tropical Pop The Wonderhorse', a warmly - and indeed, expertly - played collection of exuberant brilliance. Likened to the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band for their theatricality and eclecticism, or a Latin-American Spike Jones directed by Federico Fellini, they're a genuine ensemble act: the soloists are virtuosic and the rhythm section knows how to make the audience sweat. The band hail from the island paradise known as the Republica de Santa Banana, a country situated somewhere in the imagination between Trinidad, Brazil and Chipping Sodbury.
