(John Sayles / 2007 / USA / 35mm / 123 mins / Cert PG)
Movie maverick and independent legend John Sayles makes a triumphant return to the big screen with this period film looking at rural life in 50s Alabama with a mix of poetry and politics that the filmmaker has made his own. When ‘Pine- Top’ Purvis finds himself deep in debt, he decides to throw a big rock ’n’ roll party at his bar the Honeydripper Lounge, but when the star attraction Guitar Sam fails to show up, all hell starts breaking loose. A careful analysis of community and racism, as well as the redemptive power of music, make this a worthy addition to Sayles’ already impressive back catalogue!
