Wojciech Has’s adaptation of a novel by Jan Potocki is a truly unforgettable cinematic experience and a cult classic. The melon-twisting cat’s cradle of  stories within stories requires you to leave logic at home and embrace a  magical and disturbing supernatural world of aristocrats, rogues, demons and  seductresses who all have a tale to tell. The trippy stream-of-consciousness  style made it a counterculture classic and a favourite of Jerry Garcia and  Martin Scorsese, whose money and efforts restored the original full-length  print. David Lynch is also a big fan and has clearly been influenced by the film’s dark humour and Luis Bunuel, who seldom watched any film more than once,  watched it three times...
