Better known these days as a maker of world-class documentaries, Herzog has chosen to make a welcome return to feature filmmaking in this dramatic account of the true story of U.S. fighter pilot Dieter Dengler, a German-American shot down and captured in Laos during the Vietnam War. Dengler, who has previously featured in two earlier Herzog films, is played here by Christian Bale. Spellbinding and bizarre, like the best of the director’s work.
