A remake of John Waters’ classic of bee-hives and race riots might seem like  sacrilege to the trash purist - but the appearance of Waters himself moments  into the film flashing a group of young hairdressers should be enough to  confirm that the spirit of subversion is as strong as ever in this extravagant  musical update. Baltimore looks trashier than ever, whilst the candy-coloured  dance routines carry a bitter satirical edge that even the pope of trash  himself would be proud of.  And if that’s not enough, John Travolta dances  with Christopher Walken...in drag.  And as hairspray goes, much better for the  environment than many other CFC laden brands we could name.
