(Mon 2nd July / 8pm / £3/2 but nobody refused entry for a lack of funds)
Ramona Africa is from the US based group MOVE who live, work and
talk by a strong philosophy of the power of life and nature. What
is MOVE? In their words: "The word MOVE is not an acronym. It
means exactly what it says: MOVE, work, generate, be active.
Everything that's alive moves. If it didn't, it would be stagnant,
dead. Movement is the principle of Life." They were strident anti-
racism and environmental campaigners long before the mainstream
took up the issues. Their strong views and protests brought them
into confrontation with the authorities in their home city of
Philadelphia, with 9 members still in prison after nearly 30 years,
and which resulted in the shocking and controversial attempt by the
police to enter their community centre using a C4 'bomb' dropped by
chopper on 13th May 1985. In the resulting explosion and police
gunfire, eleven people, including five children, were killed.
Subsequent lawsuits have seen the local authority pay out millions
of dollars, although nobody has ever been held to account for the
killings. Mumia Abu-Jamal is a MOVE supporter who also has
experienced the injustice of the system whilst spending over 26
years on death row for a crime he did not commit. Ramona Africa is
the sole survivor of the May 13th bombing and is on a European
speaking tour to talk about the events of May '85 and the issues
that the MOVE group confront.
