Pan’s Labyrinth
Hot on the heels of Terry Gilliam’s ‘Tideland’, Guillermo Del Toro provides his own visionary interpretation of the Alice in Wonderland theme, as his 12-year- old protagonist Ofelia retreats into a dark fantasy world to escape the traumas of her reality, Civil War-era Spain. Though the film could and should be lauded at length for its captivating cinematography and uncanny imagery, the real talking point should be the writing- Del Toro’s script is an unashamed tearjerker, driven forward by its intriguing characters where, in such fantastical surroundings, a lesser director could be tempted to fall back on knock-off stereotypes. In the tradition of the Grimm originals, this fairytale depicts a dark, nightmarish world of fear and violence, a cautionary tale wrapped up in mythical imagery.
