The tagline says it all: “It is lurking behind you...” - The Host is a peculiar throwback to '50s Monster Movies, walking the line between horror and slapstick, and with a healthy dose of willfully blunt political satire. The premise is deliciously simple: in 2000 the US military dumps a load of chemicals into the Seoul sewer system (true story. up to this point.). The result? Whacking great monster rampage, of course! But this isn't just one for genre-fiends, as it's record-breaking success in its native South Korea shows – I'd hate to lumber it with the 'postmodern' tag, but it cheerfully subverts its genre as much as it celebrates it. It also has a REALLY COOL MONSTER, provided by the fine folks behind the Lord of the Rings special effects. A cult classic in the making.
