Ken Russell’s sparkling adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s 1921 novel follows two sisters, Gudrun (Glenda Jackson) and Ursula (Jennie Linden), as they transcend their provincial lives and encounter the decadence of the English bourgeoisie for the first time through their relationships with Rupert (Alan Bates) and Gerald (Oliver Reed). As the four become increasingly entangled in one another’s lives, the film explores ideas of free love, sexuality and class, all against a backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, iconic costumes and fabulously bizarre dance sequences.

A surprisingly tender, yet no less controversial entry in Russell’s oeuvre, Women in Love cemented his reputation as one of Britain’s most distinctive and multifaceted filmmakers. Confronting, sexy and deeply profound, it’s a must-see for any fan of British cinema, erotic cinema or queer cinema. It remains a film that challenges as much as it enthrals, raising questions about desire and social convention that feel no less relevant today.
