Oliver Laxe’s Cannes Jury Prize-winning SIRÂT is an intense, full-body cinema experience: a road thriller set against a backdrop of military oppression, vast North African landscapes, and pulsing desert raves.
Luis (Sergi López – Pan’s Labyrinth) travels through Southern Morocco with his young son Esteban (Bruno Núñez Arjona), searching for his missing daughter, last seen at a rave five months earlier. Moving from party to party, they hand out flyers and follow fragments of rumour as to where she may be headed. Tagging along with a group of travellers heading into the desert, father and son embark on a journey across the Atlas Mountains, one that becomes increasingly extreme and teeters between the euphoric and the catastrophic.
The boldest undertaking yet from a filmmaker drawn to the challenges of the real (as witnessed in the flame‑scorched vistas of 2019’s Fire Will Come) SIRÂT unfolds as part adventure, part mystic‑existential odyssey. Produced by Pedro Almodóvar, it’s ferocious, unforgettable filmmaking and a sonically explosive cinematic experience propelled by its evocative score – a powerhouse of churning, grinding techno by composer Kanding Ray.
