Vacant from our screens for a decade, and not really missed...Macaulay Cullkin is back as a cherubic, lovable sicko Michael- clad in lederhosen and Hitler mustache. With a job at the Limelight nightclub, his eclectic tastes strike a chord in the offbeat crowd and he rises rapidly in the scene under the tutelage of his new friend James (Seth Green), who becomes his mentor, lover, and eventual betrayer. In one way or another, James' style, habits and life are taken over by Michael, who continues to butt in and exert his charismatic, manipulative influence over James' narrative. As the two drama queens jockey for prominence, the film's narration becomes a bitchy affair with little regard for truth or grip on reality, as fickle and illusory as the celebrity it describes.
Based on James St. James' book, "Disco Bloodbath" this is a camp horror about the excesses of partying coming home to roost, with a brilliant supporting cast including Chloe Savigny and Marilyn Manson as a transvestite acidhead. Party Monster is loud, brash and unapologetically over-the-top, like the characters it portrays. All at once a colourful biopic, a snapshot of the 1980s, a revenger's tragedy, and of course a buddy movie. Disco lives!
