Cube Classics Live Jazz Night With The Big R Big Band + Liam Kirby

-
Thu 14 October 2010 // 19:30

(Thurs 14th / 7.30 pm / £3)

Two hot new jazz acts with an eye for the past strut their collective chops on the stage of The Cube for the first time.

Big R Big Band: Drummer Richie Paradise and sax player Richard Thomas combined a shared love of classic swing big band music to put together a new big band using the soya yoghurt dregs (as opposed to the cream) of the Bristol Jazz scene. The result threw up a multiplicity of Richards, hence The Big R Big Band. Expect enthusiasm to make up for any lack of fine polish in renditions of classics by the likes of Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Ted Heath.

... And in a change to our previous schedule, our evening opens in a maelstrom of ragtime guitar, '20s pop-ukulele and pre-War banjo with the début of 'No Soap Radio', a rare solo outing for Liam Kirby, banjoist and Mourner-in-Chief with weird-folk miserabilists Boxcar Aldous Huxley. Exploring the varied musical landscape of America in the Early 20th Century, expect murderous Calypso and sweet Hawaiian serenades, blood-curdling primitive blues and cloying Tin Pan Alley sentiment. Tune in.

Jazz DJs in the bar spin back the clock, keeping the groove on a swing time beat.
