Soundklatsch: Sum Feat. Eddie Prevost

-
Sat 27 September 2008 // 19:30

SUM (Ross Lambert / Eddie Prévost / Seymour Wright)
with support from
Grace & Delete (Chris Cundy / James Dunn + Stuart Wilding)
(Sat 27 Sept / 7.30pm / £7(£5concs) in advance)

Eddie Prévost, revolutionary percussionist with avant-garde legends AMM, returns to the Cube with SUM, his ‘total jazz experiment’ featuring Seymour Wright (alto saxophone) and Ross Lambert (guitar), who both emerged from Prévost’s regular improvisation workshop and have established themselves as two of London’s finest improvisers.

Although Prévost’s musical trajectory has taken him away from jazz into the further reaches of experimental music – as collaborations with non-jazz musicians such as Jim O’Rourke, Sonic Boom, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields and New York School composer Christian Wolff have shown – jazz was his first musical love and one he has never abandoned. SUM is a radical re-examination and re-interpretation of the jazz tradition, re-working the sounds and structures of jazz into new shapes, twisting old material into exhilarating new forms, and making the strange familiar and the familiar strange.

Prévost’s last performance at the Cube – with Evan Parker and John Coxon – produced one of the finest nights of music Bristol has seen for many years (and is scheduled for release on Spring Heel Jack’s Treader label) and his return promises to be just as intense and memorable.

Support comes from Grace & Delete, the duo of bass clarinet wizard and occasional Guillemot Chris Cundy – last seen in Bristol blowing the Venn festival wide open – and James Dunn on circuitbent keyboards and tinnitus analyser, joined for this show by trash percussionist Stuart Wilding. A fierce and lyrical electro-acoustic collision radiating clouds of hum and deep waves of resonant snarl.

Doors open at 7.30pm, music starts at 8pm sharp.
