Peter Weller stars as Detroit cop Alex J Murphy, resurrected by a city in the grip of the OCP Corporation's extreme capitalism and set to work cleaning the streets of bad guys with the intention of ushering in a new era of gentrification. Part man, part machine, Murphy's tortured humanity is set on a rigid path by his prime directives: to serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law.

Following the failed international production of his first English-language film (Flesh and Blood), director Paul Verhoeven decided to throw himself wholeheartedly into the American culture of Hollywood for his next feature. The resulting Robocop is a ferocious satire that takes aim at rampant consumerism, the pervasiveness of sexism and violence in mass media, and the militarisation of US society; themes that would recur throughout Verhoeven's Hollywood career.
