Xavier Dolan (Heartbeats) follows up last year’s romantic Laurence Anyways with an altogether darker fourth feature. Here he directs himself as Tom, a young gay man from Montreal who travels to rural Quebec to attend the funeral of his lover Guy. On arrival Tom discovers that Guy's family have no idea who he is or how he is connected to the deceased.

As it gradually becomes clear to Tom that Guy's older brother Francis, a monstrous and repressed embodiment of rural machismo, may not let him leave, Dolan masterfully unravels a moving (and sometimes terrifying) story of loss and longing that reminds us how lethal desire can be.

With shades of Patricia Highsmith, as well flourishes of Hitchcock and Polanski (evident in Gabriel Yared's exceptional, nerve-wracking score), Dolan shifts into full auteur mode in this unforgettably moody thriller. The result is an unmissable new film from one of the most exciting voices in cinema today.
