(Ben Rivers / 2012 / 88 minutes / certificate U)

Ben Rivers' slow, mesmerising documentary revisits Jake Williams, the subject of an earlier short. Jake is an outsider, living alone in a ramshackle building in the Scottish Highlands. We witness the small details of his solitary life: taking a shower, collecting wood, napping, building a raft to fish. Rivers films in grainy black and white 16mm which when blown up onto the big screen has a dream-like quality. And there is something magical about Jake and his
environment, a feeling which is played with in one surreal scene that skews our sense of reality. An unusual, quiet film that leaves a powerful lasting impression.
