(Mon 16th – Wed 18th @ 8pm, Wed 18th @ 11am (babycinema)/ £5/4/3 ttt/babycinema) (Richard Ayoade / UK / 2011 / 96 minutes / Certificate 15)

With its playful nods to Wes Anderson, Holden Caulfield and the whole cool world of the French New Wave, Ayoade’s endearing, inventive and very funny directorial début charms you through the whole range of coming of age highs and lows, horrors and embarrassments, passions and beatings. Taking in some fantastic South Wales locations on the way…

Adapted from Joe Dunthorne’s novel, Submarine is told through the eyes of self- important adolescent Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts), and focuses initially on his enormous crush on Jordana Bevan – a girl who can inspire unmitigated bullying with the implied challenge of a subtly curled lip (played tremendously by Yasmin Paige). But with his repressed mother (Sally Hawkins) spending increasing amounts of time with new age therapist and ex-lover (Paddy Considine) instead of Oliver’s depressed father (Noah Taylor), how long will Oliver be able to keep his head above water?
