In the second part of Richet's thriller, the now notorious gangster is jailed but then escapes in spectacular style. Slower in pace than Killer Instinct, the film is a character study of a man fuelled by publicity who sees himself as some kind of saviour of the common man from the tyranny of the bourgeoisie. Cassel, who put on 45 pounds for this film, dominates the screen and is brilliant. The two-film diptych is bookended with the final police shoot-out in Paris traffic as the cops, shaking with fear, close in on Mesrine and his mistress.
