(Gideon Koppel / 2008 / 94 minutes / UK)

In an acclaimed début, Gideon Koppel's film is set in rural mid-wales where he grew up and follows a year in the life of villagers. A small story but testament to the declining farm community, its values and practices. It is an observation piece, quiet and in its quiet, poignant and unnerving as a real document of a community at odds with the impact of maintaining social harmony against the encroachment of industrialisation.

Through his cinematography and unintrusive filming, Koppel emphasises the importance of landscape, both to the story and the community, and the imagery is hauntingly accompanied by a soundtrack from Aphex Twin, marking the first time Richard James has approved his music for an entire feature soundtrack.
A surprising and beautiful film.
