(Tues 3rd / 8pm / £2 ttt)
(Terry Gilliam / 1998 / USA / 118 minutes / cert 18)

A rare chance to see this cult classic on the big screen. Terry Gilliam clearly relishes the drug-fuelled lunacy at the heart of Hunter S Thompson’s infamous account of his road trip to Nevada to cover a Hells Angels motorcycle race. To draw the viewer into Thompson’s world he uses the camera like a third person who happens to be hallucinating. He also has fun with distortion effects and trippy background patterns and colours such as wallpapers and carpets. Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro are excellent as the slurring, wasted Raoul Duke and his overweight Samoan lawyer Dr. Gonzo. Certainly a case of the trip being more interesting than the destination.
