(‘Black God White Devil’ Glauber Rocha / Brazil / 120 minutes / certificate 18)
The Brazilian director Glauber Rocha (1939-81) is arguably the most powerful and enigmatic figure in post-war Latin American cinema. Much admired in his own brief lifetime by European masters like Bunuel and Godard, Rocha is now most remembered for two of his films: ‘Black God White Devil’ (1964) and ‘Antonio das Mortes’ (1969). The former, tonight’s feature at The Cube, is regarded by many as the greatest Brazilian film of all time and is certainly a haunting, visceral and unmissable classic of world cinema. ‘Antonio das Mortes’ will follow at The Cube next month.
