Thu 29 January 2009 // 20:00

(Thu 29th / 8pm / £6 advance)

Pack in and escape the winter chill at one of those special Cube nights. Acoustic reveries, angelic vocals, post-classical ambience and radio hum melt together in this one-off bill bringing together acts from both sides of the Atlantic. David Thomas Broughton, Doveman and Sam Amidon promise to transfix with a newly commissioned performance as they drift, interweave and interrupt each other in a continuous flow of lyrical delicacy and magical layers of guitar, banjo, piano and fiddle-playing, loops and samples.

Leeds based David Thomas Broughton develops his eerie folk songs into epic mantras on death, war, love, and sex. Using simple tools - an acoustic guitar, some pedals and an old radio, his live show is characterised by controlled chaos, filled with ghostly reverb, solemnity and touches of unexpected, deadpan humour. Sam Amidon was raised in Brattleboro, Vermont by folk-musician parents and plays fiddle, banjo, and guitar. His music reinvents classic Appalachian folk with distinctive vocals (think Arthur Russell), subtle electronics and Nico Muhly's gorgeous orchestral arrangements. 26-year old Thomas Bartlett aka Doveman is one of New York's most in-demand piano players, who has collaborated and toured with artists such as Antony, David Byrne, and Yoko Ono. His bittersweet songs are brought to life with the help of Sam Amidon and a cast of live collaborators.
