(Bernardo Bertolucci / 111 mins / cert 15 / Italy (subtitled) and remastered)
Bertolucci’s classic. This film is a beautiful, and thrilling film noir adaptation of Albert Moravia’s novel, which examines Italy’s fascist past. The story weaves a connection between sexual repression and fascism through the emotional struggles of the protagonist, Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant). It is complex and intelligent, mixing politics philosophy sex and moral dilemma, and the film is a stunning piece of cinematography.

In 1938 Marcello takes a job working for Mussollini and courts a beautiful but dull young woman (Stefania Sandrelli) who he will marry. He has an assignment to fulfil on his honeymoon to betray his old Professor, Quadri, who fled Italy when the fascists came into power. Will Marcello kill Quadri to be perceived as a conformist of fascist political fashion?

Marcello fights against what he perceives to be normality. He confuses normality with conformity, following the repressed bourgeois attitude leading him into a "normal" marriage and a spiralling path of murder and betrayal, lust and allure.
