The Cube is pleased to once again welcome American film writer, international cult movie authority, journalist and film collector Jack Stevenson for another evening of cinematic oddities, with two special presentations of material from his vast archive of public information films and rare shorts.

1. ATTACK CINEMA looks at the era of political radicalism in the United States where the camera was considered as much a weapon in the struggle against authority as a tool for the documenting of events.
Three radical newsreels reveal the subversive and inventive approaches to the medium taken by young film-makers freed up by the lightweight technology of 16 and 8mm cameras.

2.STRANGE MAGIC expands the borders of what is normally thought of as Surrealist cinema by including TV commercials, educational films, animated and musical shorts and unclassifiable out-takes with acknowledged surrealist masterpieces - a show full of entertaining surprises and odd moments in the best spirit of surrealism.

Following STRANGE MAGIC will be a special late night presentation of HATED: G.G. ALLIN & THE MURDER JUNKIES - an uncensored look at America’s most extreme and self-destructive punk rock anti-star, G.G. Allin, filmed just before his death. At once repulsive and fascinating, this well-crafted film illustrates how the culture of rock stardom has come full circle. Deemed by some to be funnier than Spinal Tap, it is also at times genuinely quite sad. The film drew huge crowds at festivals in the US and Europe and took the American underground by storm in the summer of 1993 but has since rarely been screened in a theatrical context.

Copies of Jack’s book ‘Land of a Thousand Balconies’ will be available for sale in the bar.
