To anyone familiar with the music of Joy Division and Ian Curtis, Control needs no introduction. Directed by Factory records collaborater and celebrated post-punk photographer Anton Corbijn, and filmed in his trademark high-contrast monochrome, the film as a superbly evocative biopic which seeks to cut through the heroic and doom-laden mythologies surrounding Ian Curtis, presenting him as a man caught in something which was beyond his control. Featuring a killer soundtrack and a mesmerising central performance from newcomer Sam Riley (who incidentally played Mark E Smith in '24hour Party People') the film is a skillful blend of biopic and social document.
