'The Royal Tenenbaums hit the road'? Well, sort of. With a cast of characters featuring a suicidal Proust scholar and a Heroin-snorting grandfather, Wes Anderson's sophomore effort springs immediately to mind, but thankfully this debut feature doesn't sacrifice its heart for indie-cool. Not that you're going to choke on saccharine, either – a spectacular corpse-smuggling sequence and the world's most heartbreaking eye examination help this movie push all the right buttons. Quite how anyone crafted a film that makes the message 'no matter how hard you try, life will screw up all your plans' seem heartwarming is beyond me, but you'd have to be pretty cold not to come out of this one grinning like a kid in the proverbial sweetshop.
