New York/new wave/no wave? A hint of Woody Allen? Frances Ha beams out all these aspects, and yet feels like something else entirely. A shrug and a smile and a touch of melancholy magic, as well as a very funny, fun, comedic film.
Greta Gerwig, beautifully playing the eponymous not-quite-heroine, says that it's only a little bit of luck that has made her life trajectory different from the seemingly endless, awkward, hapless – and at times indulgent – struggle towards becoming an autonomous being experienced by Frances. Which is
unsurprising: the film empathetically and tenderly brings to life feelings not all that unfamiliar to anyone in or out of their twenties.

And there's a wonderful Bowie-on-the-soundtrack moment...
