The plot may be deceptively simple but this coming of age story is both wryly charming and slyly subversive.

Wadjda is a Converse-wearing, pop music-loving 10 year old living in Riyadh, who dreams of owning a bike. However, in Saudi Arabia girls are forbidden from riding bicycles, much as women are not allowed to drive cars. Wadjda can't see the logic in this – so she takes matters into her own hands and decides to raise the money to buy the bike herself.

Sharply photographed by Lutz Reitemeier, this admirable debut from Saudi's first female director is also the first feature film shot entirely inside the country.
