Based on the Vanity Fair article about a group of LA teens whose obsession with celebrity leads them to break into the homes of the stars they idolise, The Bling Ring lays bare the banality of celebrity culture, with its glassy-eyed view of modern teenage disillusionment – helped along by the cool, clear ‘reportage’ cinematography of the late Harris Savides.
Since her directorial début, The Virgin Suicides, Coppola has exposed us to the unfamiliar worlds of outsiders, and in The Bling Ring she deftly consolidates familiar themes that wend throughout all her works, taking us from teen angst into the realms of starry stardom.
