Amusingly, the award-winning screenplay for Safety not Guaranteed was actually inspired by a real ad that was placed in a magazine. Upon first glance the film may sound like a light-hearted indie comedy but it is genuinely heartfelt, thought-provoking, and sentimental minus the cheese. That's certainly not to say that there aren't several amusing moments.

The film opens with a scene that may be dismally familiar to many young graduates. Cynical, out-of-luck Darius (Aubrey Plaza) is interning for a magazine which regularly involves undertaking tasks which are unfulfilling and degrading. Her life takes a bizarre turn when she accepts an assignment which involves tracking down the author of a classified ad seeking a time-travelling companion and expresses interest in accompanying him. As you might have guessed, her wellbeing is not assured.

Darius is under the watchful eye of her companions, cocky senior reporter Jeff and geeky fellow intern Arnau. However the assignment becomes more complicated when Darius develops a bond with her potential time-travelling companion Kenneth (Mark Duplass) and they begin to confide in each other. They each have good reason for indulging in fantasies of time-travel and Darius finds her cynicism weakens with her growing faith in Kenneth. As likeable as the two of them are together, we stop scoffing at the ridiculousness of the concept of travelling back in time and dare ourselves to dream that Kenneth is actually a
misunderstood genius.
