(Tue 6th – Thu 8th @ 8pm / Wed 7th @ 11am (Babycinema) / £5/4/3 TTT, Babycinema) (David Cronenberg / 2011 / UK / 99 minutes / Certificate 15)
‘Surely there must be more than one hinge into the universe,’ muses the ever- present screen presence of Michael Fassbender, here portraying a young Jung in Cronenberg’s wood-panelled affairs and analysis drama, at the moment he finds himself distancing his ideas from the great Master Freud (Viggo Mortensen, imagine!)
Also includes concepts of order and desire, mysticism and rationalism, a prolonged spanking scene, and Kiera Knightly pronouncing herself ‘dirty’. Cracking stuff.

A thrilling return to the Cube for Kansas's fearless, heartbroken prom queen Piney Gir. Former singer in art-rockers the Schla La Las, she's released five albums of sad sunshine and exuberant twang. Her latest, 2011's Geronimo!, reboots the 1960s of mascara-run Spector girl groups, Pacific-coast surf harmonies and effortlessly tuneful longing.
Poppy Perezz's electro-Latin pop is the sound of a casiotone highlife blasting off into the Milky Way. Afrobeat rebuilt and remodelled with toy instruments and joyous dancing.
Bristol riot grrrl-inspired three-piece Drunken Butterfly take their name from the Sonic Youth song. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Kim Gordon, Babes in Toyland, PJ Harvey and Patti Smith, they combine guitar, bass and drums with ukulele and melodica to create a fusion of snarly fuzzy punk rock and acoustic folk pop.
Plus Bristol's finest club night featuring all female artists, Lipstick On Your Collar, takes over the Cube for late dancing.

(Jean-Jacques Vierne /1961 / France / 98 minutes / Cert. PG / English dub only)
If you are a fan of adventure stories, this is a real treat. Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece is a wonderful live-action take on the iconic comic creation, featuring all the best-loved characters.
When Captain Haddock inherits a ship named The Golden Fleece from an old acquaintance, he and his trusty friend Tintin set off to Turkey to collect what they believe to be a priceless treasure. To their disappointment, the ship turns out to be nothing more than a clapped-out merchant ship. Then a mysterious stranger offers to buy the boat for a small fortune. Tintin wonders whether his friend’s inheritance is quite as worthless as it appears....
Tintin is portrayed by Jean-Pierre Talbot who's expert martial arts skills makes it a joy to watch. Combined with George Wilson's larger-than-life Captain Haddock the film lifts the comic books from page to screen in a film which no Tintin fan, young and old, will want to be without.

(Mon 12th - Weds 14th March / 8pm / £5/4)
(Sean Durkin / USA / 2011 / 102 minutes / Certificate 15)
A psychological thriller from gifted first-time writer-director Sean Durkin - awarded Best Director at last year’s Sundance Film Festival for this original piece. Featuring an impressively mature performance from Elizabeth Olsen, in only her third feature film and the quite sublime John Hawkes (Me and You and Everyone We Know, Winter’s Bone). Hawkins, in a role not unfamiliar to previous roles, plays an evocatively hypnotic and haunting Patrick, a cult leader, conveying a level of brutality and subservient power over his cult members, especially Martha (played by Olsen). After two years of sexual ‘cleansing’ by Patrick, Olsen, at this point known as Marcy May, contacts her sister to rescue her. However due to these two years of psychological and physical torment, her adaptation back into society proves problematic.

Bristol's We Be Records presents Caretaker playing aggressive, discordant rock music sounding somewhere between Neurosis and The Jesus Lizard. Their new album 'Providence' is out March 5th and has been well received by X-FM and the Radio One rock show. Support comes from Oxford-based troublemakers The Cellar Family, with their unique brand of angular noise rock, plus local reprobates Sonance (featuring members of local favourites Mea Culpa) playing noise-influenced, atmospheric doom. The Artist
Michel Hazanaviciu/France/ 2011/ 100 mins/ Cert PG
It's 1927, and suave, moustachioed matinee idol George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. He's dashing, a little arrogant, and his
romantic swashbucklers have women swooning. But silent movies are about to be washed away by new-fangled talkies. When studio boss Zimmer (John Goodman) offers
him a chance to steal a march on his rivals in this exciting new format, Valentin
rejects it out of hand in favour of his own epic silent project. Alas, this proves
to be a flop. But as Valentin's life falls apart and his star wanes, the young actress whose career he nurtured, Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), finds hers in the ascendant.
The Artist is a gloriously executed love letter to the silent era of Hollywood and an undeniable homage to the glitz and glamour of 1920s and 30s cinema.

A contemporary of pioneering radiophonic composers and inventors such as Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram and Ron Geesin, in the 1950s and 60s, FC (Fred) Judd was one the unsung heroes of British electronic music. The author of 11 books and a regular contributor to a host of technical hobbyist magazines, in the early 60s Fred created the soundtrack for the sci-fi puppet series Space Patrol, the first programme on British TV to feature a full electronic score.
Practical Electronica, is a new hour long documentary by the Brighton based film maker, composer and instrument inventor Ian Helliwell which examines early British electronic music through the work of Judd. The film tells Judd’s story using 8mm cine, archive footage, animation, experimental video, sound
visualisation and electronics. An intuitive montage rather than a traditional narrative based documentary, the film remains rooted in the amateur tape recording world that Judd inhabited during the 50s and 60s.
Ian has also worked closely with record label Public Information to compile a recently released album of Fred's electronic music.
Ian will be present to introduce his film, discuss his own work, and in addition screen some of his shorts, taking a cue from the DIY experimental tradition that Judd personified.

It’s all guns-a-blazing for this installment of the Hellfire Video Club, as we present a night of poliziotteschi (Italian crime films). Back in the 1970s, the Italians made some of the most violent and stylish cop thrillers to ever hit the screen. Expect a night of non-stop punch-ups, big cars (and big weapons), and moustachioed, turtle-neck clad vigilante cops with so much raw testosterone that they make Dirty Harry look like a bed-wetting mummies boy. Can you smell that heady aroma of burnt rubber and Brut yet?
Tonight’s main offering is the classic ‘Almost Human’, directed by Umberto Lenzi in 1974. Tomas Milian stars as a remorseless sociopath who kidnaps a
millionaire’s daughter. Cue Henry Silva - the police inspector who will stop at nothing to bring Milian to justice.
This will be followed by another classic poliziottesco, featuring a pair of deadly crime lords whose gang war tears Rome apart.

Shamelessly aping Andrew Logan’s Alternative Miss World, this event is about transformation, not beauty. Contestants are invited from all and sundry to bedeck themselves in fantastical finery to best represent the area of Bristol they feel most connection with; be this a fashmina and oversized Gaga glasses for Miss Clifton or tiffin-shaped earrings and graffitied mega-costume for Miss Montpelier...
The stage is yours for an evening of glitter, glue guns and glamour, queer beer and straight shooters, featuring our usual blend of film, music and general bloody brilliant party fun.

Dir: Grant Gee/ 90 mins/ UK/ 2012/ 12A
Patience (After Sebald) by documentary filmmaker Grant Gee (Joydivision) offers an exploration of the work of acclaimed writer W.G. Max Sebald (1944 – 2001) via a walk through East Anglia tracking his most influential book, The Rings of Saturn.
Patience is a multi layered film essay on landscape, art history, life and loss. It explores and illuminates the work of Sebald through an intense, rhythmic montage of image.
Add to the mix a soundtrack by the great Leyland Kirby (The Caretaker), and contributions from artists including Iain Sinclair, Tacita Dean and Chris Petit....
We are delighted to host the film's co-producer, Gareth Evans to introduce the film+ Q&A after.

When Talking Heads emerged from the New York punk scene in the late 1970s, it was soon clear that, although they shared that scene's back-to-basics ethos, they were actually a very different affair to their punk peers. Their career was characterised by restless experimentation, but their core sound was defined by their spare-yet-funky guitar work and David Byrne's distinctive yelping vocalisations – all propelled by one of the era's finest rhythm sections.
For this celebration of the band, we'll be screening rare footage of the Heads at their best. Then the Tongues take to the stage, recreating the spectacle of Talking Heads playing at their expansive peak, playing hits from Stop Making Sense, the seminal concert film, as well as groundbreaking albums like Fear of Music and Remain in Light.
Followed in the bar by a set of blistering new wave floorburners from DJ East Clintwood.

Juno writer Diablo Cody has been brave enough to create a unsympathetic lead character in this darkly comic tale. Charlize Theron is Mavis Gary, a writer experiencing a mid-life crisis who returns to the small hometown she hates to try and win back an old flame. The fact that he is married with a young child doesn't seem to register but her delusions are brought home by another high-school friend who becomes a drinking buddy. He remembers her as the prom queen. She barely remembers him at all, but a poignant friendship develops between them. A sharp and well played character study that is refreshingly unsentimental.
